DIY Barn Door

I’m so excited to share my barn door tutorial!!!! Full disclosure we had a pretty hard time hanging it up! Sooooooo, this tutorial will focus mostly on building the barn door rather than installing it. You can watch this video for more of an install tutorial.

MATERIALS

• (1) 4x8 23/32 sanded plywood

• (2) 6ft 1x6 boards

• (2) 8ft 1x4 boards

• (4) 8 ft 1x2 boards

• Liquid Nails

• Small Clamps (I used like 10)

• Large Clamps

• Miter saw

• Nail Gun

• Sand Paper

• Behr Ultra white Paint & Primer (see step )

• Laser Level (for mounting)

• Barn Door Mounting Set

• Barn Door Handle

STEP 1

Purchase all the materials listed above! Start with your plywood and cut to size. Size will depend on your specific ceiling height and doorway. It is super helpful to read the instructions for the barn door track to determine sizing (it has to be a certain height from the floor etc.)

STEP 2

Cut the 1x6 board to match the width of the plywood. For example: If your door is 40 inches wide - cut the 1x6 board 40 inches. Then, cut the 1x4 board to fit remaining height. This will most likely be height of the plywood minus 11 inches. Glue with liquid nails and clamp!

STEP 3

Now onto the diagonal wood detailing in the middle of the board! This was the trickiest part for me to figure out! Start at the top left corner. cut the end of a 1x2 at a 45 degree angle using the miter saw. Stick it in the top left corner. Make sure it is nice and snug!

STEP 4

Mark a line on the other end of the 1x2 to match the side board using some kind of straight edge. Then use the miter saw to cut along the marked line. Glue & clamp!

STEP 5

Now repeat that process in the bottom right corner!

STEP 6

For the smaller diagonal pieces in the top right corner, measure the center width of the top of the board and mark! Cut the end of a 1x2 board at a 45 degree angle using the miter saw. Match up the center of the 1x2 end with the mark made earlier. Repeat process used earlier to trim the other end of the board (Mark a line on the other end of the 1x2 to match the side board using some kind of straight edge. Then use the miter saw to cut along the marked line. ) Glue & clamp!

STEP 7

Repeat this process in the bottom left corner

STEP 8

At this point you should have 4 diagonal pieces. For the center diagonal piece - measure the center of the height of the board and mark. Cut the end of a 1x2 board at a 45 degree angle using the miter saw. Match up the center of the 1x2 end with the mark made earlier. Repeat process used earlier to trim the other end of the board (Mark a line on the other end of the 1x2 to match the side board using some kind of straight edge. Then use the miter saw to cut along the marked line. ) Glue & clamp!

STEP 9

Use a nail gun to nail down all your wood. Don’t get too crazy. Just a nail or 2 at each end!

Now sand the rough edges!

Using Interior flat BEHR paint and primer-in-one, paint your board! I used ultra white. I used a roller for the big areas and a brush for the smaller areas such as the sides of the 1x2s and corners. Lesson learned: don’t skip the wood putty!) In hind sight I would have used wood putty to smooth out nail holes and grooves in wood for a smoother finish.

STEP 12

Pour yourself a drink! You are almost done!! In about 2 coats my board was looking freshhhhh.

DIY outDoor bar

Still in quarantine over here… all bars are shut down, so I made my own! Here’s how..

Grab the materials listed below:

• Cascade iron co brackets (2-3 depending on length of wood)

• concrete anchor screws

• level

• drill

• hammer

• black paint

• paintbrush

• wood (2 x 12)

• styling pieces!

Step 1: Hand Lettering on Wall

My sister is a hand letter! We uploaded her lettering to a computer, hooked it up to a projector, and went over it with black exterior paint!

Step 2: level holes

we used this level to level the top holes of the bracket (if you don’t your drinks may slip off). We used concrete anchor screws. Linked HERE.

step 3: hang brackets

We got these cascade iron co brackets for 20 each!! We decided to make the top holes about 41 inches from the ground so the top bracket was 42 inches - standard bar height. That way bar height stools would fit!! Make sure the holes are level so your drinks won’t fall off the bar!!

Step 4: place wood

We get a 2 by 12 pieced of wood. We trimmed it to fit the wall. We placed the brackets 10 inches in from the end of wall. If you have a longer area to work with you may need an additional bracket to support the wood! See Cascade Iron Co website for specifics!

Step 5: Style & Enjoy!

Baby girl nursery

I’m almost done with the nursery and so excited to share!! It was so hard to get started - there are so many cute ideas out there! Seriously, my Pinterest board was flooded with cute nursery ideas and styles. I wanted something that was cozy, chic, yet kid friendly. IKEA HACK: DRESSER REVAMP FOR $15

You know me, my decor whims change like the weather… so I was getting sick of the vibe we had going in the master bedroom. We couldn’t afford an entire remodel so I changed some key pieces - one of them being the dresser. We had a dark gray dresser before (something we bought together when we first moved in - and I was trying not to make the room too “girly”). The dark gray really didn’t compliment the rest of the room. I always love white furniture and should have went with my gut the first time! My husband definitely would not let me buy a whole new dresser (especially when I really liked that dresser, but just wanted to change the color). So i found a solution! THANK YOU CRAIGSLIST AND AMAZON. I sold our gray dresser on craigslist and bought the exact same one in white on craigslist. I was so surprised how easy it was to find! I actually ended up making money! I wanted to bring in the gold to compliment the new lamps I got - so I found these handles on amazon! Follow these steps to get the look!

1) Get a IKEA HEMNES dresser! Find it new at IKEA or get a used one one craigslist!

2) Remove old handles/knobs

3) Replace with these GOLD HANDLES from AMAZON (ONLY 16.99 for a 15 pack!)

4) Enjoy!

Gold handles are the perfect way to revamp any dresser!

STYLE: CHANDELIER + CRAFT PAINT

Your favorite onilne site is having a major sale but the item you want is not available in the exact color/finish you want. No problem! Spray paint/craft paint is your best friend! I got this hanging chandelier from Wayfair.com.  During and amazing sale.

It came in a weird silver matte color that just didn’t go with my aesthetic. So instead of passing up the sale I made it the exact color I wanted myself. 

This time I desided to go with deco art craft paint. I got it from Michael’s in the shade antique metallic gold. I used a sponge brush and after a couple coats it turned out exaclt how I wanted it!  Yay. Another cheap trick for ya!

DIY: PATIO BENCH

MATERIALS

-Wood clamps 

-wood glue

-wood

-12 pieces total (3.5 x .75)

-6  cut 46 in

-6 cut 64.5 in

-3 (left over pieces)cut 21 in 

-10 cement blocks 

(Total = $60)

-Measurements are based on standard bench cushions. You can change your wood length based on your cushion! 

-First bench pieces cut according to your cushion length 

-2nd bench cushion add 18 inches to the cushion length to allow for corner area

STEPS

FOR SHORT PIECE:

1)Glue & clamp 2 pieces of wood together at a time

2) Glue & Clamp all 3 clamped pieces together 

3) Glue & Clamp two 21 inch wood pieces horizontal across the bench (Allow 9 inches on each end to place cement blocks)

4) Add optional screws for support 

FOR LONG PIECE:

1)Glue & clamp 2 pieces of wood together at a time

2) Glue & Clamp all 3 clamped pieces together 

3) Glue & Clamp four 21 inch wood pieces horizontal across the bench (Allow 9 inches on each end and between two middle pieces to place cement blocks) 

4) Add optional screws for support

DIY: SHE SHED DESIGN UNDER $150

My husband built a storage room in the backyard for my mom a couple summers ago.  My mom wanted it to be an area that could double  as functional storage and a place she could have her friends over to enjoy a cocktail. Sooooo Bar + Dream office = She Shed. The problem was the amount of binders and books she wanted accessible… it looked cluttered and I just couldn’t get all the colors to work. So solution = curtains! I used curtains to cover the binders on the side shelves and reserved the middle shelves for bar accessories and office supplies. The key was sticking to the color scheme while still allowing the side binders and books to be accessible. Here’s how I did it!

Here is What you need (Total $150)

• String lights - 2 for $12 each (Target) (sale)
• Rope -  $5 (Michael's)
• 2 white curtain panels - 2 for $24 (Home Goods)
• Props for bar and shelf (Price Not Included)
• 2 stools - $33 each (Wayfair)
• Hooks - 3.50 (Target)
• Bar Shelves - $15 each (IKEA avdala)
• Bar top - Linnmon 47 by 23  $16.99 (IKEA)
• Middle shelf - Billy bookcase $59 (IKEA)

STEPS:

1) Hang wall hooks on each side, one in the middle, and one in between the side and middle hooks. (5 total)

2) Tie twine to the side hooks and hang curtain. Use the middle hooks for extra support.

3) Screw hooks in the wood beams and hang string lights along hooks

4) Set up shelves face out and place bar top on

5) Style shelf as desired! & Enjoy with a cocktail!
